Highly efficient Skyactiv-G 2.0 and 2.5 Direct-injection Gasoline Engine

This 2.0-litre engine features a balance between the spirited drive of its powerful low- to mid-range torque and excellent fuel efficiency. New air intake port, new shapes of piston in the areas of its top/edge of top/skirt, new piston rings, new fuel injection system and Water Flow Management system are incorporated. These changes increase low-end torque by 6.2 percent, while also reducing real-world fuel consumption and particulate matter formation during combustion. The result is enhanced levels of dynamic performance, fuel economy and environmental friendliness. The changes also made it possible to use a unified compression ratio of 13.0:1 for the engines shipped to all markets.

With a high 13.0:1 compression ratio, the reduced weight of an aluminum-alloy cylinder block, and a balancer unit that reduces low frequency rattling, the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 engine achieves high levels of dynamic performance, fuel economy and quietness. The same update as SKYACTIV-G 2.0 is applied. In addition, a new cylinder deactivation system available further reduces fuel consumption when driving at constant speeds between 40–80km/h.

Cylinder deactivation [SKYACTIV-G 2.5 only]

The system shuts down two of the engine’s four cylinders in light-load situations, such as when cruising at a constant speed. Running on two cylinders reduces pumping loss and mechanical resistance. Deactivation is achieved via a switching mechanism in the hydraulic lash adjusters (HLA) of the first and fourth cylinders. When running on all four cylinders, these serve as the fulcrum (pivot point) for each rocker arm, and the arms operate the intake and exhaust valves. Automated releasing of lockpin in HLA switches the fulcrum to the valve side, stopping the movement of the valves to deactivate the outer two cylinders. Airflow intake volume, fuel injection amount and ignition timing are precisely controlled to allow the engine to switch smoothly between two-cylinder and four-cylinder operation. Cylinder deactivation is more effective at low speeds, improving fuel economy by approximately 20 percent when driving at a constant 40km/h, and by approximately 5 percent at a constant 80km/h.

Features

The windscreen-type Active Driving Display is divided into two zones for better legibility with high-priority vehicle-status information and advanced safety information shown in the lower section and driving environment information such as turn-by-turn directions in the upper section.

The Bose® premium sound system package features a 10-speaker setup, including new silk dome tweeters in the A-pillars, as well as Bose’s own AudioPilot™2 ambient noise compensation system and Centerpoint®2 surround sound system.

The climate-control system featuring a full-auto air conditioner gives excellent heating/cooling performance with low energy consumption. 

The rear seat adopts Mazda’s first two-step reclining mechanism, allowing the seatback to be leaned back to 28° so that rear passenger can find a more comfortable position. Furthermore, air-conditioning vents are mounted on the rear of the floor console for greater comfort.

Newly adopted auto-hold function retains braking pressure when the driver’s foot is removed from the brake pedal after coming to a complete stop, and quickly releases it when the driver takes action to move again. This realizes greater comfort and convenience when driving in the city.

The power liftgate employs a compact, lightweight and quiet spindle damper unit, opening and closing by a simple switch operation. Liftgate opening height is freely settable with a button on the key fob. Touch sensors help prevent items from getting trapped in the liftgate.

At Mazda, we believe genuine safety can only be realized when driver awareness and control is maximized so that the risk of accidents is minimized. Mazda CX-5 is equipped with i-ACTIVESENSE – Mazda’s integrated suite of advanced safety technologies designed to inform, support and protect.

Adaptive LED Headlights offers the driver greater support for recognizing potential hazards when driving at night. The system improves night visibility and helps the driver avoid hazardous situations by combining the use of Glare-free High Beam (featuring an adjustable illumination range) and Wide-range Low Beam.

A forward sensing camera detects lane markings and assists the steering to keep you in lane. The system also alerts you when it judges an unintended lane departure is imminent by vibrating the steering wheel or with an audible alarm. When the system determines lane departure is intentional (use of turn signals, etc) steering assistance is cancelled and no warnings are given. The system operates at speeds above approximately 60km/h.

Blind Spot Monitoring uses 24GHz quasi-milliwave radar sensors to detect vehicles in the blind spots behind and to the side, and using a turn signal while BSM detects a vehicle triggers visual and audio warnings.

Adaptive Front-Lighting System promotes safer driving by allowing you to see further at intersections or around curves at night. Taking inputs from the steering angle and vehicle speed, AFS predicts the shape of the road and directs the headlamps' beams in the direction of travel, illuminating the path CX-5 will actually follow.

Lane Departure Warning System senses lane markings on the road surface. When the system predicts departure from the lane it issues an audible warning similar to the noise a car makes when it runs onto a rumble strip to prompt timely steering corrections. The system assesses driver inputs such as use of the turn signals to weed out false alarms.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert uses the same sensors as BSM to alert the driver when it detects vehicles approaching from either side during reversing operations. Warnings are given by a flashing indicator in the door mirror and a beep.

Smart City Brake Support [Forward/Reverse] detects vehicles both in front of the vehicle and behind, and automatically applies the brakes to help prevent or soften a low-speed impact. Operating at speeds up to 30km/h, the new forward sensing camera recognizes vehicles ahead within an expanded range. When reversing, the system operates at speeds between approximately 2 and 8km/h and detects obstacles via ultrasonic sensors.

Advanced Smart City Brake Support

Driver Attention Alert uses information such as steering wheel angle, vehicle speed, and output from the forward sensing camera to assess the driver's condition and help prevent accidents caused by fatigue or lowered alertness. The system monitors and compares current behaviour with learned data on how the driver performs when fresh, and suggests a rest break when a significant difference is detected.
